ACTAR-3He

Active targets were, to our knowledge, used only scarcely to perform transfer reactions. Recently, ACTAR TPC was used to study the 2H(20O,19N)3He reaction, using D2 gas (mixed with 10% of isobutane – iC4H10) at a pressure of 950 mbar. The solid CD2 target equivalent thickness was 11 mg/cm2, which is considered as a thick target for medium and low-energy nuclear physics, but the vertexing capabilities of ACTAR TPC allowed to keep a good resolution in excitation energy. Moreover, the placement of auxiliary Si detectors all around the active volume and the addition of isobutane as a quencher providing a proton target, enabled the simultaneous study of complementary reactions such as the elastic scatterings 2H(20O,20O)2H and 1H(20O,20O)1H, and the one-neutron transfer reactions 1H(20O,19O)2H and 2H(20O,19O)3H.

For this project the demonstrator of ACTAR, SMACTAR, will be used (see figure below).
